Exotica Moderne is a quarterly publication showcasing the new tiki and lowbrow art and artists, exotic cocktails, kustom kulture, music and more. Focusing on where these genres have been and where they are heading, Exotica Moderne features emerging artists as well as those spearheading these movements. Where all of these subcultures meet and intersect, Exotica Moderne covers next wave of tiki and lowbrow art.

Issue 16 of Exotica Moderne is a stunning edition featuring the truly exotic work of Phoenix-based James Owens. The beautiful cover by James leads off another great issue packed with our usual array of articles and stories.

Along with James, we showcase the works of artists Nick Elam and his carvings and other works, Frankie Kokosza’s lamp and mugs as Taboo Relics and Tracy Ruge-Folks’ exotic works in oil on velvet.

Tiki Tom Duncan transports us the to Hawaiian Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair while Tiki With Ray travels to England and showcases the home bar Hala Kahiki Derby.

And since we’re making the rounds, Justin Cristaldi makes a mini roadtrip around the isle of Manhattan as he looks at the state of Tiki cocktails and bars in New York City.

Kari Hendler returns with a final ode to the Godfathers of Tiki at Oceanic Arts, giving us a first-person look at the closing events and auction, and the enthusiastic tribute to their contribution to the rise of Tiki culture.

Tiki Lindy looks at modern Japanese food pop culture, commonly referred to as Japanese Street Food. This “small bites, portable cuisine” genre fits right in with the pupu platters we have so grown to associate with tiki bars and Polynesian restaurants.
